Toe River Project Access Comes to an End
To our patients and partners in Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties:
After much deliberation, and nearly 30 years of service in Western North Carolina, CareReach has determined it cannot realistically sustain operations and will be winding down as an organization in 2027.
Toe River Project Access (TRPA) came to CareReach from Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in January of 2021. With its longstanding emphasis on helping people access care, TRPA was a natural fit for CareReach, and we are proud of the services we have provided to the community over the last five years. With the imminent sunset of CareReach, we sought to find a new home for TRPA so it could continue its good work. However, despite multiple conversations with partners and community organizations over the last few months, we have not been able to find a viable home for the program. Financially, it is a difficult time for health and human services organizations across the landscape, and it's understandable that another organization could not take the program on at this time. Sadly, the program's last day in regular operation was May 15, 2026.
Thankfully, over the decades that TRPA has served the community, like-minded programs and organizations have grown to support the health and wellbeing of the people of Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey. It is our hope that these strong service providers will help lessen the impact of a future without TRPA. We have developed a list of these resources. See the links below for versions in English and Spanish.
We are proud of the work we’ve accomplished at CareReach and through Toe River Project Access. While our chapter closes, the work does not, and our hope is that it will be sustained by those who believe in it and lead it every day in communities across Western North Carolina. Thank you for your support and partnership.
